For unknown reasons, last week was an especially dangerous time for kids waiting at the bus stop. Fourteen people were struck by moving vehicles at bus stops in the past five days. Five children dead. Two adults and seven children injured. Three of them remain in critical condition.
My son and daughter wait at a bus stop every day. My wife has taught them to wait until the bus comes to a complete stop. She has told them to walk way out in front of the bus and to make sure they can see the driver’s eyes when crossing in front of the bus. They also know to never go behind the bus or near the wheels of the bus. But sadly, none of these teachings would have saved the children involved in last week’s incidents.
The responsibility of these horrific accidents fall to the drivers of the vehicles that ran them over.
While the authorities complete their investigations, we are left to speculate as to what contributed to these serious accidents.
Were these tragedies caused by texting and driving? Or excessive speed? Did one of the drivers fall asleep at the wheel? Was DUI a cause of one of these fatal crashes? Did the brakes or power steering systems fail and cause the drivers to lose control?
One of the accidents was a hit and run. Was it a deranged driver that hit and killed that little boy intentionally?
We can make ourselves crazy trying to figure out the answer to why these tragedies occurred. And the truth is, we should. We have to ask our authorities to look under every rock, pull every cell phone record, inspect every vehicle and interview every available witness. Why?? Perhaps by knowing these things we can prevent another child from being killed.
