The Washington Post reported that a 7 year old boy died after being attacked by two pit bulls in Lowell, Massachusetts. The mother witnessed the horrific attack and was heard screaming, “That’s my baby! That’s my baby!” She was helpless to pull the child away from the angry dogs. Several 911 calls were made, but sadly when police arrived, the child was already dead.
An officer shot one of the viscious dogs when it started to charge him. The officer reported that the dog did not stop coming toward him, so he shot the dog a second time. Other officers were able to capture the second dog and currently have it detained.
The Post reported that neighbors have said that the boy’s mother is still trying to wake herself from this nightmare.
The dangerousness of the breed is hotly debated since the dogs were originally bred to bite and hold large game around the face and head. They are much stronger than humans and cannot be pulled off of the animal or human they have attacked. The American Pit Bull is often bred for the purpose of fighting other dogs.
Many cities have banned the breed or have strict laws regarding ownership of these animals. The dogs are not allowed on military bases at all.
In Lowell, pit bull owners are required to keep the dogs muzzled or in a temporary enclosure. The dogs must also be spayed or neutered. Unfortunately, neither of these laws saved the life of this child.
Investigators believe that the boy entered the enclosure. Once inside the dogs attacked.
