As of today, 24 people in our area have been diagnosed with fungal meningitis. Three of the victims reside in West Virginia but received the epidural steroid injections at Insight Imaging in Roanoke, Virginia or New River Valley Surgery Center in Montgomery County.
Eleven people have died nationwide. One of the fatalities was at Lewis-Gale Medical Center in Salem, Virginia.
Health officials have determined that all of the patients that have been sickened in Virginia were given shots from the second lot of recalled medications. Therefore, they are most concerned with patients who received the injections on or after August 8, 2012.
New England Compounding Center of Framingham, Massachusetts voluntarily recalled all of their products after it was discovered that steroid injections had been contaminated with airborne mold spores.
