Diadra Shaffer, age 35 and mother of a one month old son was charged with driving while impaired, careless and reckless driving, misdemeanor child abuse, left of center driving and driving while her license was revoked on Sunday. The charges followed a serious accident involving Shaffer’s SUV, a brown Chevy Blazer and a white Ford passenger van.
The North Carolina Highway Patrol concluded that Shaffer was traveling Northeast on US-158 and crossed the center line, struck the fully occupied church van and came to a stop in the middle of the highway. The van overturned after it went off of the right shoulder.
When help arrived, no one was able to get out of the vehicles because all exits were damaged. Hazmat was also called to the scene to clean up a gasoline spill from the van.
Several people were transported to area hospitals, none with life-threatening injuries.
The van had been rented by the Kingdom Hall Jehovah’s Witnesses from Martinsville, VA.
