A relatively new cultural phenonmenom has sparked an increase in DUI related arrests and drunk driving related accidents and fatalities. During the past decade, the Thanksgiving holiday beginning at 6pm Wednesday through 6am Monday morning has become synonomous with bar hoppng, over-indulging at holiday parties and late night binging. Shopping centers open around the clock along with a large uptick in restaurant visits have all led to more people on the roadways and a greater chance of becoming a statistic in an alcohol related car accident.
The blitz social media campaign, “Make it to the table, Don’t Drink and Drive this Thanksgiving Eve” is being organized by the NHSTA and its affliates. Officials are deeply concerned by the stark increase of 800 recorded DUI related deaths from the 2012-2016 Thanksgiving weekends.
It is impotant to remember this holiday season that a little pre-planning may save your life or the life of someone you love. The NHSTA recommends that all individuals who plan to drink take the following precautions to avoid becoming another fatality on our roadways.
- Make a plan for a safe ride home before anyone takes the first drink. Our decision making skills are impaired by alcohol consumption. Make a plan with a sober mind.
- Use public transportation, cabs and buses offer safe rides home.
- Preprogram your phone with an emergency contact that can be called if you need a ride.
- Wear your seat belt and be vigilant. If you see a drunk driver, report it by calling 911.
Spend this holiday with your friends and family in the safest way possible. Enjoy having them close and of course, if you drink, don’t drive. Happy Thanksgiving!
