Over 40% of the over the counter and prescription drugs sold in the United States are manufactured in India. Companies do this to keep cost of manufacturing down, but unfortunately it may be the patient who pays the ultimate price.
Recently, the World Health Organization estimated that 1 in 5 drugs manufactured in India were actually fakes. And other drugs have been identified by the FDA as being produced in unsafe facilities. One of the reports actually stated, “that the flies in critical areas of the plant were too numerous to count.” Unfortunately, we’re not just talking about over-the-counter headache medicines or lip balms, we’re talking about life-saving drugs used in chemotherapy for cancer patients, antibiotics that are given to women after childbirth and an entire list medications used to prevent death.
Recent reports from the FDA also indicate that similar problems exist in China. However, China has declined to grant necessary visas that would allow the FDA to move forward with more facility inspections.
