Many of us have wonderful memories of a childhood filled with toy “cap” guns, metal slides, and sling shots. We’ve probably even wondered how any of us survived.
While we can sit back and joke about the crazy things we used to do before there were ipads and Xboxes, many people can not. Just as recently as 2012, 11 children died as a result of playing with a dangerous toy.
The CPSC reported that in 2012 alone, there were eleven (11) toy-related deaths of children under 15 years old, and an estimated two hundred sixty five thousand (265,000) toy-related injuries treated in U.S. hospital emergency rooms.
Posters and Safety Guides are available for FREE download at the Consumer Products and Safety Commission website to help parents and grandparents buy safe toys this holiday season.
One of the biggest mistakes parents and grandparents make is to buy inappropriate toys for children of the wrong age level. The CPSC website also offers suggestions for types of toys to buy for selected age groups. This is the best guide to use, as manufacturer labeling is often misleading.
The Organization W.A.T.C.H. (World Against Toys Causing Harm) has released its annual dangerous toy list just in time for holiday shopping. Be sure to review this years list before venturing out to take advantage of the many holiday discounts.
