State Police reported that fewer people died over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend then in 2013. Only 5 people lost their lives in pedestrian and auto accidents last weekend despite the slippery roadways and high traffic volume.
The number is down from 11 in 2013. This year, sadly, 3 of the five people killed were not wearing seat belts. Alcohol related crashes were also down.
State Police are still reminding drivers to stay focused and sober this December as Drunk and Drugged Driving Awareness month kicks off in December.
Virginia State Police reported these statistics for the 2014 Thanksgiving weekend:
- 9,789 speeding citations
- 2,312 reckless driving citations
- 90 DUI drivers were arrested
- 693 safety belt citations
- 204 child safety seat violations.
The Virginia State Police investigated a total of 1,191 traffic crashes across the Commonwealth.
