As an airbag accident lawyer, I worry sometimes that the NHSTA and the media have sounded the alarm on Takata airbags too loud and too often. Consequently, we’ve heard so much about the 10 year old recall, that our minds instantly wander when we hear the name “Takata.”
Many More Airbag Accidents to Come
There are not enough people or supplies to repair the millions of vehicles recalled worldwide. And new makes and models are being added to the list daily. Therefore, many consumers may be unknowingly driving vehicles that have outstanding recalls. Adding to the confusion as to whether specific vehicles are actually under recall, is the NHSTA’s effort to prioritize the most dangerous vehicles. Vehicles that are housed in high temperature and high humidity areas have been determined to be more dangerous than the same makes and models that are housed in mild climates.
Vehicles Added to the “Do Not Drive” List
The NHSTA announced that it was adding the 2006 Ford Ranger and Mazda B-Series pickup trucks to the list. The urgency stems from accidents involving two Ford Rangers. The trucks had airbag inflators with the same production dates. These two vehicles were involved in accidents where the airbag inflators ruptured and killed the occupants. Ford and Mazda have offered free towing to a repair site. Several Hondas are on the “Do Not Drive” list. They are the 2001-2002 Honda Accords and Civics, 2002 model CR-Vs and Odysseys, 2002-2003 Acura 3.2TL, 2003 Acura 3.2CLs, and the 2003 Honda Pilots. Testing indicated that these vehicle’s airbag inflators have a 50% chance of rupturing. Therefore, they are considered exceptionally dangerous.
Why Are Takata Airbags Dangerous?
When an airbag inflator ruptures it causes metal shrapnel to be expelled into the passenger compartment of the vehicle. Anyone sitting near an airbag is in grave danger. Therefore, this defective product has killed people.
Airbag Repair is NOT a DIY Project
One man died when trying to repair the airbag inside a 2001 Honda Accord. Police photos show that the airbag ruptured and sent metal pieces into the car.
