On June 23, 2014 auto makers expanded a recall for faulty airbag deployment. In many of these cases, airbags have spontaneously deployed but not inflated properly. This is a potentially deadly situation because when the airbag doesn’t inflate into the pillow-like structure credited for saving lives, pieces of the airbag and the dashboard come out of the dashboard and steering wheel like shrapnel from a bomb. This malfunction will cause severe injuries or even death to the occupants of the vehicle.
Airbag manufacturer Takata has admitted to keeping poor and inadequate records in its plant in Mexico, leaving auto makers and owners no way of knowing if their vehicle is equipped with these deadly defective airbags. Read more about this problem here
