Shortly after 1:00 am Thursday morning a Roanoke County Police Officer noticed a bicycle lying on the side of Williamson Road. After stopping to investigate, the officer found the body of Max Brook, age 24, lying on the side of the road. Apparently struck by a hit and run vehicle, Max died before help arrived.
Police believe that the accident probably occurred sometime between 9:40 and 10 pm on Wednesday night.
After examining evidence from the scene officers have determined that the suspect vehicle is black in color and is thought to have front end damage. Police are asking for help in locating the vehicle and the driver in the fatal hit and run accident. Police also suspect that the accident may have involved DUI.
As more and more people turn to bicycles, walking, mopeds, scooters and motorcycles as a primary mode of transportation, drivers need to be acutely aware of the changing landscape of our roadways.
Safe Driving Techniques for Sharing the Road with Pedestrians and Cyclists
- When approaching a cyclist to pass, always allow at least 3 feet and pass at a reasonable speed. This is actually a Virginia law and you can be ticketed for failing to do this.
- Do not text and drive.
- Do not drink and drive.
- Do not pass a cyclist in a blind curve or if there is poor visibility.
- If you hit a cyclist or pedestrian, call for help and stay at the accident scene until help arrives. Leaving the scene of the accident may result in charges for felony hit and run.
