During the last few years of my practice, I had the opportunity to help a German cyclist who was the victim of a severe and catastrophic crash. His injuries destroyed his life and I was able to obtain a $21 million dollar settlement for him and his family. Seeing firsthand how the accident devastated this young man’s life has made me more aware of the dangers of a sport that was once thought to be unexciting and safe.
Because of Virginia’s gorgeous mountainous terrain and the growing number of people who are looking for outdoor adventures, mountain and road cycling has become a popular sport in our area.
Keep an eye out for the Hyland Bicycle. The fender mounting can break or bend, which can cause the rider to fall or crash.
Civia, the maker of the bicycle, reports that one injury has been reported due to a bracket breaking. The rider suffered a cervical spine injury and nerve damage.
Consumers should discontinue use of the bicycle immediately and contact an authorized Civia Cycle dealer to receive a $60 credit.
The Hyland bicycles were originally sold for between $1,200 and $4,500 from April 2008 to March 2013.
The recalled fender sets were sold for about $60 during the same time period. The bicycles were available in blue, green, olive and red. The after-market fender sets were sold in black, blue, green, olive, red, and silver.
