These airbags have been determined to be dangerous to drivers and passengers sitting in the front seat of the listed vehicles. Japanese manufacturer Takata announced that there is a faulty propellant inside air bags that is unstable. This propellant can explode even after a minor accident and is made even more unstable by tropical or humid conditions. When it explodes metal shards and pieces of the airbag components are sent into the cabin of the vehicle toward anyone sitting in the driver’s or passenger’s seats. One accident that occurred earlier this year in Florida was so grizzly that the death was originally investigated as a stabbing since sharp metal pieces went into the victim’s neck. As of the date of this post, the defect has been linked to at least three deaths and more than 100 injuries.
The NHSTA is urging owners of the listed vehicles to take immediate action. Contact your manufacturer’s service center to find out when parts will be available and schedule an appointment today.
