But the defective medical device will still be marketed to women in the U.S.
According to a statement released in June, Bayer Inc. has decided not to sell the Essure device in the UK, Canada or Finland due to declining sales.
Perhaps the reason for the declining sales are that physicians in those countries are no longer recommending the use of the unsafe device for their patients, therefore impacting Bayer’s bottom line?
Or is it because those countries were getting ready to ban the device entirely like Brazil.

About the Essure Device:
The Essure system consists of 2 metal coils made of stainless steel, titanium, nickel, and polyester that are implanted into the fallopian tubes. The fallopian tubes will form scar tissure around the coils causing a blockage of the tubes. This should prevent pregnancy from occuring. The implant is meant to cause permanent sterilization and is intended only for use in women who do not want to have more children.
Complications of Essure:
1) The FDA has learned of more than 1,000 pregnancies occuring after the Essure device has been inplanted. Many of these pregnancies occured after having the implant for several years. Pregnancies in women with the Essure device are considered high-risk and the FDA has been notified of more than 470 miscarriages occuring in women with the Essure device.
2) Essure devices also carry a risk of ectopic pregnancy. Ectopic pregnancies can be life-threatening for women and are most often treated with emergency surgery.
3) Perforation of the fallopian tubes or other organs may occur. The Essure device is permanently placed in the fallopian tubes, but unfortunately in some women the device has come apart and pieces of it have perforated the fallopian tubes or organs such as the Uterus, Cervix, the Intestines and the Colon. In some cases entire coils have perforated the walls of the fallopian tubes.
4)Once the device has formed a hole in the fallopian tubes it is free to travel throughout the body. Migration can occur and cause serious complications or even death.
5) Some patients report severe pain that does not allow them to function. They cannot take care of their families, work and many report feeling immobolized.
6) Allergy and Metal Toxicity have been reported in patients with the Essure device. When the product was originally introduced in 2002 in contained an allergy warning so doctors would know not to implant the device in women with a known allergy to nickel. Bayer later petitioned the FDA for permission to remove the warning so that it could be more competitive in the market. The result was that patients with a known allergy to nickel were implanted with the device. Those patients suffered from hives, rashes, itching and swelling. Because physicians were kept in the dark about the materials used to manufacture the product, the treating physicians did not immediately relate the patient’s symptoms to the device and suffered for years.
7) Death has been related to the use of this device. These deaths include stillborn babies, women, and babies born alive but died shortly after birth.
8) And if the above isn’t bad enough….. reported side effects include:
- heavy bleeding during periods
- irregular bleeding between periods
- chronic fatigue
- loss of consciousness
- severe and spontaneous cramping
- suicidal thoughts
- depression
- anxiety
- balding
- joint pain
- headaches
- vomiting
- weight gain
- unexplained numbness
So, this sounds like a science experiment gone bad, why don’t these women just get the device out and stop complaining?
Ha! Like life is ever that easy! Because the device was orginally meant to be permanent, Bayer has never come up with a way to remove the device! In other words there is NO easy solution for women who must have this life-threatening device removed. In emergency situations, doctors have removed the devices with very invasive surgeries. It can take weeks for the patient to recover and costs thousands of dollars. Many insurance companies will NOT approve removal of the device and have classified it as a cosmetic procedure (?????) and therefore will pay NOTHING for the medical costs associated with the device.
