If you live in Roanoke, then you’re lucky enough. Especially if you sell SUV’s. Our mountain peaks give us amazing seasonal views but also set us up for treacherous road conditions.
Tonight’s forecast is calling for a rain, freezing rain, snow, sleet, and more freezing rain. Ice accumulations are expected to be a tenth of an inch to a quarter of an inch and snow accumulations are expected to be 1-3 inches with more in the higher elevations.
While this doesn’t seem like much compared to last December’s fifteen inches of snow, this kind of precipitation can be more dangerous than a deep snow.
Why?
One of the biggest problems caused by freezing rain is ice accumulating on trees causing them to snap and fall onto power lines and roadways. Ice also accumulates on bridges and overpasses quickly and is difficult for drivers to detect.
Will driving an SUV or 4WD drive guarantee my safety?
Um, No. Driving a large SUV, 4WD truck won’t guarantee your safety. Driving any of those vehicles is helpful in snow but not on ice.
