Experienced drivers know that when we hit the road we need to be ready for just about anything. Here in Roanoke, Virginia, especially in Fall, the weather can change in an instant. A beautiful sunny day suddenly turns to overcast with downpours or a drizzly rainy day leads to thick fog overnight. While it keeps things interesting and reminds us not to leave the house without an umbrella no matter the weather predictions, it can create dangerous driving conditions on the road that may increase the risk of having a car accident.
Keep these tips in mind when driving on wet roadways:
1.Be prepared. Driving on wet, slippery roads is dangerous enough without being properly equipped. Make sure windshield wipers are in good condition, headlights are on, and tires have plenty of tread.
2.Take your time. Slowing down is the only way to keep your vehicle from hydroplaning. If you start to hydroplane, stay calm, do not suddenly brake or speed up. Allow the vehicle to decelerate slowly until you regain control.
3. Be aware of other vehicles, especially vehicles larger than yours. Large semi-trucks can spray windshields with plumes of water making visibility difficult. Keep your distance from larger vehicles and be ready to hit the windshield wipers as they pass.
4. Allow a greater following distance. Other drivers may be having difficulty with hyroplaning and visibility. If another driver loses control of their vehicle, more following distance will give you a greater chance of avoiding a car accident.
