Virginia and West Virginia have numerous backroads that run on top of cliffsides and over mountain terrain. While scenic, these mountain passes can be dangerous for drivers. Cars and trucks can easily go over an embankment during the course of an accident. Drivers and passengers may be trapped and unable to get help. Vehicles that have gone over an embankment are usually difficult to see from the roadway hindering rescue attempts.
Because travel in any season can be treacherous, experts recommend that drivers carry Roadside Emergency Kits in their vehicles. These kits are especially necessary in many parts of our state that have spotty or no cellular coverage.
I already have a first aid kit in my car, isn’t that enough?
First aid kits are a great start, but unfortunately a first aid kit will not be helpful if you are trapped for an extended amount of time in your vehicle.
Keep these items in your vehicle, especially when traveling in winter weather:
- Blankets
- Flashlight with batteries
- Fix a Flat or other tire inflator
- Tire pressure gauge
- Paper towels
- Granola or energy bars
- Several Bottles of Water
- Tool kit with screwdrivers, pliers, wrenches, a knife or multi-use tool
- Flares
- Triangle reflectors
- First aid kit -restock often
- Ice scraper
- Shovel
- Lithium-ion battery with jumper cables (can also charge your phone)
Keeping these items in a plastic tote or a large backpack will keep them from getting lost or rolling around in your vehicle. Be sure to familiarize yourself with the items before an emergency occurs.
