Heavy rains are predicted to continue falling throughout our region tonight and early tomorrow. Saturated grounds in some areas of Roanoke have proven to be unstable as at least two serious mudslides have occurred in Southwest Roanoke County and Salem, Virginia. Thankfully, no one was injured in these incidents, although both roads are reporting one passable lane due to the heap of mud and debris blocking the roadway.
Spring Lake Dam is also in danger of failing. Thirteen homes have been evacuated as a precaution, even though officials are reporting that the integrity of the dam is not compromised at this time.
Thunderstorms are predicted tomorrow afternoon. Expect to see trees toppled as saturated grounds will be no match for windy conditions.
What does this mean for drivers? Plenty. Heavy rains flood roadways and reduce visibility. Wet roadways make for slick conditions. High winds can tip high profile vehicles. Flooded roadways can carry vehicles and their occupants downstream. These are dangerous driving conditions and since we’re all supposed to stay home when possible anyway— stay home and enjoy a game of monopoly tonight.
If you’re an essential worker and it is not possible for you to shelter in place on this treacherous night, please consider these safety tips as you drive in and around the Roanoke Valley.
- When driving in heavy rain maintain a steady safe speed to avoid hydroplaning.
- Make sure windshield wipers are in good working order.
- Headlights on for safety!
- Don’t drive through flooded roadways.
- Maintain a safe following distance, adjust for visibility and road conditions.
