Tragically, in the United States a child or teen dies or is injured from guns every 30 minutes.
>Yesterday, a 7 year old child from Burnt Chimney was accidentally shot and killed. The Roanoke Times is reporting today that police believe the boy’s 12 year old brother was handling the firearm at a neighbor’s house when it fired. Now, I first want to say that I am not an anti-gun person. I own firearms and have a concealed weapon permit. However, if you choose to own firearms, you have the responsibility to secure those firearms from all children. In fact, any time you allow other children in your house, you have a duty to supervise them and keep them from any dangers in your house or on your property.
Sadly, that does not appear to be what happened with the recent case in the fatal Burnt Chimney accident. If you own firearms, make sure that they are secured in locked cabinets or cases that only you and/or your spouse have a key to.
If you insist on keeping a loaded firearm in the house, buy a special case that the loaded gun can be kept in, that still allows quick access to the firearm.
