We were fortunate enough in Southwest Virginia to be given a 3 day weekend with mild temperatures and beautiful sunshine. Many families planned last minute road trips or headed to the Virginia Tech vs. Liberty University Football game at Lane Stadium.
Unfortunately, some people did not survive fatal crashes that occurred on Virginia roadways over the holiday weekend.
On Saturday, September 3, 2016, a tanker truck carrying diesel fuel overturned and caught fire in the median on I-81 near Exit 114 in Christiansburg. The truck was the only vehicle involved in the crash. The driver in the accident, Jeffrey Curtis Pritchard of Pulaski, died in the accident. Virginia State Police report that he was wearing his seatbelt. The Interstate, which was especially crowded due to the Virginia Tech football game, was closed for several hours while Virginia State Police and local authorities worked to extinguish the flames and to assess damage to the roadway.
And again on Saturday night, Jeffrey Curtis Hairston, of Martinsville, died when the motorcycle we was riding was struck by an unknown vehicle. After being hit by the other vehicle, Mr. Hairston was thrown onto Route 220 and struck a second time by a Mazda car. He was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. Virginia State Police are currently searching for the first vehicle involved in the fatal hit and run crash.
Our thoughts are with the families of these victims during this very difficult time.
