Walker Kenneth Ashley, age 71 died after being struck by a vehicle while he was walking along side Williamson Road early Thursday morning. Twenty-two year old Evan Andrew Sarver has been charged with DUI and is being held at the Roanoke City Jail.
While Roanoke is becoming more cyclist and pedestrian friendly, pedestrians are still taking a chance anytime they choose to walk alongside a road.
Using safety precautions can minimize the risk, but ultimately any pedestrain might find themselves sharing the roadway with a distracted or drunk driver.
Still, to minimize the risk of being injured or killed by someone who is negligent, keep the following tips in mind:
- Always walk facing traffic. It is important to know what is coming toward you.
- Do not use headphones or talk on your cell phone while working near a roadway.
- Always wear bright colors during the day.
- If walking at night, wear armband lights, reflective clothing, a headlamp and carry a flashlight. Bright colors are not enough when it is dark outside.
- When crossing intersections, make eye contact with the drivers and wait for a signal to cross.
- Use crosswalks when available.
