As the saying goes, kids will be kids. I have two children, ages 7 and 9 and they still have the same energetic and curious nature they were born with. It is great to watch them explore and play. That’s not to say that I don’t still hold my breath while they climb trees and wrestle with one another. While I realize that I can’t protect them from every injury, I also know from my experience working with child injury that many accidents involving children can be prevented.
In the past few years, our community has seen a two serious day care accidents occur. One in Lynchburg, involving a fire that tragically took the lives of two small children, and another in Pulaski in which a bookshelf fell onto an older child and killed him.
This is devastating news for any parent who relies on day care.
Many Day Care Accidents Can Be Prevented
Examples of potential daycare accident hazards include:
- Loose handrails going up and down stairs
- Wet floors
- Unsafe playground equipment (hot slides, bolts exposed, etc.)
- Falling objects (Books, toys, and other children)
- Dangerous chemicals left accessible to children (cleaning products, paints, etc)
- Medications not stored properly (locked and out of reach)
- Unsafe sidewalks, driveways, and parking lots (snow and ice, holes, etc.)
- Uneven, crumbling, or dangerous walkways, hallways, and doorways
- Unsafe and defective toys
- Unsecured bookshelves and television stands
- Children left unsupervised
- Access to a swimming pool without a lifeguard or parent present (gate unlocked)
- Doors without hinge guards (causing finger amputations)
