According to the Roanoke Times, one adult and one child were struck by a train in Smyth County near Chilhowie, VA on Sunday and killed. The adult and two children were walking along the trestle when the train came. Representatives from Norfolk Southern estimated that it would take the train approximately one mile to stop.
According to the US Department of Transportation Federal Railroad Administration, approximately 500 fatalities occur each year and about as many injuries occur each year due to incidents like the one in Chilhowie yesterday.
