In 2014, 32,675 people were killed in traffic accidents in the United States. Over 8,000 of those fatal accidents occured at intersections. Most busy intersections are equipped with some type of traffic signal. Some intersections have flashing caution lights, while others have full fledged 3 signal stoplights.
Human error is always a factor and for various resaons people run red lights. Sometimes, drivers are distracted by cell phones, texting, other people in the car, or their own thoughts and simply do not notice they have approached the intersection. Other people are simply in a hurry or do not want to wait for the light. Some drivers may also be driving under the influence (DUI) and do not react to the red light. Whatever the reason, red light running is especially dangerous.
Most people don’t realize that they can be seriously injured or killed when involved in a low speed crash. Most intersection accidents occur when one vehicle is turning while another vehicle is holding the lane. The two cars intersect, resulting in a “T-Bone” crash. There is not as much protection for vehicle occupants on the sides of the vehicle and the accident usually results in serious injury to the occupants of the vehicle.
The NHSTA recommends the following startegies to help drivers stay safe when approaching intersections with stoplights:
Stop on Red- Nobody Dead
Easy to remember, right? Stopping on red applies to drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians. Obeying the speed limit gives drivers time to stop for red lights when coming to an intersection.
Don’t Squeeze the Lemon
Ha, another good line from the NHSTA. Yellow lights are designed to give drivers approaching the intersection time to slow down and stop and allow time for drivers already in the intersection to pass through safely before oncoming traffic is allowed to pass. Yellow lights are not designed for drivers to hurry up and “beat the yellow”.
Next time you’re running late, consider the true risks and possible consequences before running that red light. Not only are you risking a ticket that carries a hefty fine and court costs, serious injury or death can result due to this careless action.
