According to a report by the Los Angeles Times this week an inquiry by the NHSTA and the Justice Department has discovered documents revealing General Motors knew of the potentially fatal defect in 2001, before the recalled products were sold. Internal memos from the company cite the reasons for not fixing the defect as too costly, too time consuming, and changes to the design would not fully fix the problem.
