I love dogs. I grew up with dogs. My mother and sister train therapy dogs. You could say we are “dog people”.
What I don’t love- dangerous products.
Products that injure or maim normal everyday unsuspecting people.
I have served two clients that have suffered serious, permanent eye injuries just because they were using a retractable dog leash to walk their dogs.
So now it’s time to tell you about the dangers of using defective retractable dog leashes.
First, the connecting point on your dog’s collar can break, which can cause the swivel buckle to release and fly back into your face and/or eye, causing blindness.
Second, the swivel hook itself can break or bend, causing it to release from the dog’s collar and fly back into your face and/or eye, causing blindness.
Third, the lead itself can break at different points, causing a portion of the leash or the plastic spacer behind the swivel hook to fly back into your face and/or eye, causing blindness.
Fourth, the leash itself can get wrapped around your hand or fingers or legs, causing deep cuts and/or amputations.
And it turns out, they’re not safe for dogs, either.
Many dog training professionals do not like retractable leashes. Too much slack in the leash can allow the dog to run into traffic and get hit by a car, bike or motorcycle.
Retractable leashes actually reward the dog for misbehaving, the dog pulls on the leash and the retractable dog lead gives more leash to the dog.
Also, there is constant tension on the leash and dog trainers have said this also sends mixed messages to the dog.
