A Michigan man died this past summer after being attacked on his evening jog. Autopsy reports revealed that the 46 year old cancer survivor bled to death from wounds to his arms and legs after an attack from two 100 pound dogs with a history of aggression.
Follow these tips for safer runs in Virginia:
Don’t run. Tough advice for a runner! Running away only activates the chase instinct in most dogs, especially aggressive ones.
Be still. Most of the time, the best thing to do is to become motionless. The dog may back off when he realizes the “chase” game is over.
Curl up like a rock. If you fall or are knocked down, curl up like a rock to protect your head and face.
Take precautions. Know your route and avoid homes where there are known to be aggressive dogs. Fences can fail and allow dogs that are normally contained in a yard to run free. Carrying a small can of pepper spray can also provide some protection, but remember, pepper spray is affected by the wind and rain and may not always provide reliable protection.
