A recall was announced earlier this week of the Ace Bayou Bean Bag and Gaming Chairs. The foam beads used to fill the chairs pose a danger of suffocation to users.
I was surprised to read that two children had died because of this product. One was a three year old and the other was a thirteen year old. Both children were found inside of the chairs and had died of suffocation.
Sadly, few people realize how dangerous the filling of most bean bag chairs and many stuffed animals can be.
The particular type of filler used in the ACE Bayou chair is a small foam bead. These beads are small enough to be inhaled.
Adding to the probability that they will be inhaled is the fact that they are very lightweight and cling to surfaces like the face, nose and mouth. If a child were to climb inside the bag, like in a game of hide and seek, they would immediately inhale the beads and then would not be able to blow the beads back out of the nose and mouth and would suffocate.
The CPSC has recalled the product and ACE Bayou is providing kits to secure the zipper and keep the chair from being opened. More information about this dangerous product can be found on the CPSC website. www.cpsc.gov
