This morning, as I prepared to head to the office, I saw a headline on the news that both lotteries are at record highs. In fact, at the time of this posting, the Mega Millions jackpot is estimated to rise to $850 Million by tomorrow night’s drawing and the Powerball is expected to be $730 Million by Wednesday night. I mentioned it to my wife as she hustled by getting ready for the day and she shrugged and said, “That would do” in the flattest, least excited voice she could muster. She is like that, she doesn’t sit idle and think of things she would do if she had that much money, she’s a doer and prefers real life circumstance as opposed to life’s “what if’s”.
And so, I didn’t have the chance to ask her what she would do if she suddenly become a multi-millionaire. And I began to wonder, what would most people do?
- Pay off debt? Some 32% of Americans have medical debt. Fifty percent of people with medical debt are unable to pay.
Read that again. Fifty percent of people who have medical debt have defaulted on those bills. The survey respondents were employed and had health insurance and they still couldn’t pay off their medical debt.
There was no data available from the study that determined why respondents had sought medical treatment in the first place, but its safe to say that many of those respondents sought medical care after a car accident, dog bite, medical malpractice, or a slip and fall. They sought care for an event they never anticipated and didn’t have time to prepare for. Many of those respondents were in debt because of an accident that was not their fault.
So that brings me back to the original question; If you are injured in a car accident, should you wait to call an attorney?
The answer is no. You should not wait. Hiring an attorney early will send a message to the insurance company that you expect a fair and complete offer to settle your personal injury lawsuit.
A personal injury lawyer can also determine what your claim is actually worth. Remember, insurance companies want to pay as little as possible to settle your claim. They also want to settle the claim as quickly as possible and will try to do this even before an injured person is finished treating. Our office will calculate:
- all of your current medical expenses, even if you have multiple providers
- your lost wages
- a figure for your pain and suffering
- your future medical expenses
- your future lost wages
- your current accident-related medical debt
and we will determine a number that compensates you for what you have been through.
We will also gather all of your documentation, your medical records and bills, the accident reports, camera footage from the accident if available, and photograph your injuries as well as your property damage.
We will help you with the big things and the little things so you can focus on healing.
You won’t have won the lottery, but after working with us, we will make you feel like you did.
If you’re playing this weeks’ games, play responsibly, have fun, and good luck.
