I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend. I spent the time off with my wife and kids hiking and staying up late watching movies. We like comedies and action movies and after watching several car submersion scenes I started to wonder if we have the tools we need to escape a vehicle if we found ourselves trapped underwater, in our car.
What are Car Escape tools:
Car escape tools are classified as anything you can use to escape your vehicle in the event you are trapped inside or anything you can use to draw attention to your vehicle to let rescuers know that you are in distress.
If you have been unfortunate enough to have been in a collision, gone over an embankment, or have driven into a body of water, you know that time is of the essence.
Water is particularly dangerous, as the water pressure will make it impossible for you to open the vehicle doors and the electric powered windows may not work. Even worse, if your seatbelt won’t disengage you can lose precious seconds that may cost you your life.
Having car escape tools in an accessible place can save you and your passengers from further injury or death after a serious car accident.
I recommend having a glass hammer, a seat belt cutter and a battery powered flashing light that can be placed on or near your vehicle.
A glass hammer?
Glass hammer are special hammers that specifically designed to break tempered glass. They have a chiseled point and can successfully shatter a car window if the vehicle is submerged. We’ve all seen movie stars “pop” out rear windows with their feet. Remember that those are scenes from the movies and not what will actually happen in a real life escape.
A seat belt cutter?
Three point safety belts, brought originally to the market by Swedish auto maker, Volvo, has been credited as the most effective safety modification in vehicles ever, can also bring peril to a car accident victim. Because vehicle seat belts are meant to restrain the occupants of the vehicle in the event of an accident, they may be unable to detach after a collision. This is when a seat belt cutter can save your life. Look for one that has been tested, read reviews and watch demonstrations online before purchase.
A flashing light?
In Virginia and West Virginia, we love our country roads. Pity that many don’t have guardrails. One crazed deer and the next thing you know your car is careening down an embankment. If it is dark, rescuers will have a difficult time finding you. A bright, flashing light will draw attention to your location and help good Samaritans and first you responders find you. Test the light every few months to make sure batteries have a charge and are operating.
Good News! Many of the above items are on sale today as part of Cyber Monday. Give a gift or safety to those you love this year. Wishing all of you, former, current and future clients a happy and safe holiday season.
