I’m excited about today because I will be visiting with some terrific fourth and fifth graders at Lincoln Terrace Elementary School. During our visit, the students will learn about their brains and the reasons why they need to protect their brains by wearing a helmet every time they ride a bike or a scooter. Each child in the fourth and fifth grade will receive a helmet at the end of the program.
I was inspired to “get out there” and educate the students about helmet use because of the many cycling accident cases I’ve had. While working on these cases, I saw firsthand how a tragic accident can have catastrophic implications for the victims and their families. One of the victims, an adult male was so badly injured during his accident that he remains a quadriplegic and suffered severe traumatic brain injury. He will remain bedridden for the rest of his life. The other two most recent cases, were wrongful death cases and their families will be grieving the loss of their loved one for the rest of their lives.
My hope is to motivate these students to wear the helmets every time they ride and to raise awareness in the community about the importance of doing so.
Many thanks to The Virginia Trial Lawyers Foundation for the help and assistance in making this possible.
