Saturated roadways and nighttime conditions do not make for optimal driving conditions on I-81. An already over-crowded roadway, the stretch of highway between Lexington and Blacksburg is especially treacherous. Unfortunately, commuters in our area woke up to a grim reminder of how dangerous that roadway can be this morning.
Authorities closed Northbound Interstate 81 from approximately 2:15 am until 11:30 am today because of an accident involving two tractor trailers.
Authorities believe the first truck to crash drifted off of the left side of the road, struck a guardrail, overturned and blocked the highway. Within a few minutes, another trucker traveling on the roadway struck the overturned truck. Authorities believe the second trucker would not have been able to see the first disabled truck because it was on its side with no visible lights. Both drivers died at the scene.
A lone survivor, a passenger in one of the trucks, had non-life threatening injuries.
Trucking accidents on I-81 are common. In these tough times of Covid-19, the truckers on our highways are a HUGE part of how many of our vulnerable citizens are able to shelter in place. These essential workers are now risking their lives on the highway and through the possibility of exposure. As always my thoughts and prayers go out to their families.
Wrongful death lawsuits in Virginia involve actions taken by the victim’s surviving family to get compensation for the wrongful death of a loved one. I have represented parents who had lost a son, adult children who had lost a loving father, a young wife who had lost a husband. I can tell you it is never easy. In each case, I could not take the pain away from the grieving families, but I was able to ensure that the families received restitution for their loss. In other words, the families were able to focus on grieving and healing, rather than worrying about how the bills were going to be paid.
