Channel 10 News out of Roanoke is reporting today that an accident that occurred on Saturday has indeed resulted in one fatality. Soriah R. Lunt, aged 23 from Buena Vista has succumbed to her injuries and died. Six other people were taken to the hospital after a Jeep Grand Cherokee carrying six people collided with a Honda Civic. Soria was a passenger in the Honda.
Virginia State Police are investigating the accident. So far, they have determined that the driver of the jeep pulled from the northbound lane into the southbound lane to pass a slower vehicle. Tragically, the Honda Civic that Soriah was riding in was traveling in the Southbound lane. The jeep collided with the civic in a head-on collision.
All drivers and passengers of both vehicles were taken to the hospital with injuries. Virginia State Police are reporting that no one else suffered life threatening injuries.
Head-on collisions are considered extremely dangerous. In a car accident of this type, both cars are colliding with huge amounts of kinetic energy. Using the VDOT Speed limits map as a reference, the speed limit on the stretch of Rte. 501 where the accident occurred is 55 mph. If we assume that both vehicles were traveling at 55 mph or faster, I am sure the impact was horrific.
During a head on collision, safety features can mean the difference between life and death. Airbags and seatbelts used in tandem have proven to be capable of preventing extensive head injuries, spinal injuries and injuries to the abdomen.
Sadly the safety features on these vehicles did not prevent the loss of Ms. Lunt, but hopefully no one else will succumb to their injuries. Our thoughts and prayers are with Ms. Lunt’s family as well as the other victims of this accident.
At the time of this posting, charges are pending.
