Traumatic injury to the brain can be caused by many factors:
- A severe blow to the head that causes swelling inside of the skull putting pressure on the brain
- A rotation at a high rate of speed can cause damage to the brain
- Bleeding inside of the skull or a loss of blood flow to the brain will damage the cellular structure of the brain
- Anything that penetrates the skull can cause severe damage to the brain as well as tissue and blood vessels inside of the skull
- A jolt that can cause the brain to move back and forth inside the skull will cause brain damage.
If you have suffered a TBI (traumatic brain injury) you may be experiencing the following symptoms:
- impaired thinking or memory
- impaired movement
- loss of vision or hearing
- personality changes
- depression
- death
How many people experience TBI (traumatic brain injury)?
- In 2010, about 2.5 million emergency department (ED) visits, hospitalizations, or deaths were associated with TBI—either alone or in combination with other injuries—in the United States. -http://www.cdc.gov/traumaticbraininjury/get_the_facts.html
How do TBI’s happen?
- According to the CDC, TBI is most commonly caused by falls. Falls are most likely to happen to elderly patients and children.
- Automobile accidents are also credited with causing a significant number of traumatic brain injuries each year.
While TBIs are not visible they are often the most serious kind of injury a person can sustain. The CDC estimates that the United States loses $60 billion in lost productivity and medical costs associated with TBI.
Someone who has sustained a TBI and has permanent brain damage may not be able to return to the type of work they performed before their accident or may never be able to work again.
Some people who have a suffered a TBI are unable to care for themselves and require expensive round the clock care in a nursing home or rehabilitation facility.
