LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) recommendations for use will be changing in 2014. The new rule requires child seat manufacturers not to recommend the seat be installed using LATCH if the child’s weight plus the weight of the seat combined is over 65 lbs. The seat should be installed using the seat belt method of installation recommended by the seat manufacturer.
The LATCH system, credited with making car seats easier to install and therefore safer, may not be strong enough to hold the newer, heavier car seat models and the weight of the children when combined.
