Unfortunately, we see this very headline more often than we should. Work accidents that cause serious injury and death are common everyday occurrences in the United States. The horrific stories are the ones that make the news.
Everyday in the United States, more than 12 workers die in work related accidents.
After searching with the keywords “worker dies” I was astounded to see so many news articles appear on my computer screen.
Just a week ago, a 19 year old man in Campbell County was killed in an accident that involved an excavator. Jacob Tyler High, a 2014 graduate of Rustburg High School, was employed by Hawkins-Graves, Inc. Reports indicate that the 19 year old was found under heavy machinery at the work site.
On October 17, 2015 a man from Oregon died from injuries he received when he fell 50 feet into a smokestack on the Yale University campus. The man was a subcontractor hired to upgrade Yale’s central power plant.
In 2012, a worker at Bumble Bee foods died in a tuna oven. He was working inside the oven, when a coworker assumed he was in the bathroom, dumped 12,000 pounds of tuna on top of him and turned the pressure cooker on. It was reported that the oven reached approximately 270 degrees before the man’s body was found.
Sadly, if proper procedures and workplace policies were enforced, many accidents like those listed above could have been prevented.
